8-12 September 2008  Australian Organic Geochemistry Conference

The School of Earth & Environmental Sciences and the Australian School of Petroleum are co-hosts of the next Australian Organic Geochemistry Conference which will be held at the National Wine Centre of Australia on September 8-12, 2008.

On this occasion we shall be joining with the International Humic Substances Society and the Natural Organic Matter Interest Group in a combined national conference, the theme of which is Oil, Soil, Water and Wine.

Contributions in the general fields of Petroleum Geochemistry, Humic and Other Organic Matter in Soils, Natural Organic Matter in Potable Waters, and Isotope and Environmental Geochemistry will be considered.  The organisers would particularly welcome offers of presentations on the following themes:

Palaeoenvironmental reconstruction
Petroleum characteristion - from source to reservoir
Understanding gas formation
Very old oil
Environmental monitoring
Novel methodologies to characterise NOM
Microbes - deep biosphere to soil organic matter
Waste-water recycling
Drinking water treatments

This meeting will continue the tradition of previous AOG, AOG-IHSS and AOG-NOM conferences in providing an hospitable forum for student oral and poster presentations.

Following the conference, authors are invited to submit their papers for publication in a special issue of the international journal Organic Geochemistry.

Full details of AOGC 2008, including the deadline for submission of abstracts and a facility for online registration, are now available on the conference website at

12-part seminar series

"The Research Institute for Climate Change and Sustainability is hosting the seminar series during the first semester in 2008 to explore the likely impacts of climate change. It is widely acknowledged that the planet has become warmer over the past century and anticipated climate changes over coming decades will have significant global impacts.

"The seminars will address a range of issues relating to the mitigation of carbon emissions and adaptive strategies to respond to the anticipated impacts of climate change." [visit the the RIsCCS web site for more information]
